Read articleVegetable Oil weighs 0.915 kg per litre. Convert litres to kilograms (and back) using its exact density.
1 liter of Vegetable Oil weighs approximately 0.915 kilograms (or 915 grams) at standard room temperature. Because mass equals volume multiplied by density (\(m = V \times \rho\)), multiplying volume in liters by 0.915 gives the exact mass in kg.
Vegetable Oil has a density of 0.915 kg/L, which makes it 8.5% lighter than water. Refined soybean or canola blends are sold as generic 'vegetable oil' and cluster at 0.915 kg/L. They all float on water because they are lighter than it.
Deep-fryer top-ups, commercial kitchens buying 20-litre jerry cans, biodiesel feedstock calculations, and used cooking oil collection.
Soybean oil is about 0.917 and canola about 0.914, so a blended label sits in between. Used frying oil can thicken and run a few percent denser.
Type the volume in litres. The calculator is preset to Vegetable Oil at 0.915 kg/L.
Flip to kilograms → litres to find how much space a given weight of vegetable oil takes up.
See kilograms, pounds, millilitres and gallons. Each litre adds 0.915 kg.
Refined soybean or canola blends are sold as generic 'vegetable oil' and cluster at 0.915 kg/L. They all float on water because they are lighter than it. To convert, multiply the volume in litres by 0.915. To go the other way, divide the weight in kilograms by 0.915.
kg = Litres × 0.915
L = kg ÷ 0.915
1 L → 0.915 kg
10 L → 9.15 kg
100 L → 91.5 kgConvert 5 litres of vegetable oil to kilograms: 5 × 0.915 = 4.575 kg, or 10.09 lb. Reversed: 4.575 kg ÷ 0.915 = 5 L.
| Scenario | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 L of vegetable oil | 1 × 0.915 kg/L | 0.915 kg |
| 5 L of vegetable oil | 5 × 0.915 kg/L | 4.575 kg |
| 20 L of vegetable oil | 20 × 0.915 kg/L | 18.3 kg |
| 100 L of vegetable oil | 100 × 0.915 kg/L | 91.5 kg |
| 10 kg of vegetable oil (reverse) | 10 ÷ 0.915 kg/L | 10.93 L |
| Litres | Kilograms | Pounds | US gallons |

At 0.915 kg/L it is less dense than water (1.0), so the oil rises to the surface of any water-based liquid.
1 litre of vegetable oil weighs 0.915 kg (915 grams, or 2.02 lb), using a density of 0.915 kg/L.
1 kg of vegetable oil is 1.093 litres. Divide the weight by the density: 1 ÷ 0.915 = 1.093.
Multiply the volume by 0.915. For example, 10 litres of vegetable oil is 9.15 kg and 50 litres is 45.75 kg.
