Read articleGarden Topsoil weighs 1.2 kg per litre. Convert litres to kilograms (and back) using its exact density.
1 liter of Garden Topsoil weighs approximately 1.2 kilograms (or 1200 grams) at standard room temperature. Because mass equals volume multiplied by density (\(m = V \times \rho\)), multiplying volume in liters by 1.2 gives the exact mass in kg.
Garden Topsoil has a density of 1.2 kg/L, which makes it 20% heavier than water. Moist garden topsoil is about 1.2 kg/L. It is lighter than sand or clay because it contains organic matter and air spaces.
Raised-bed filling, lawn top-dressing, planter weight for balconies and roof gardens, and bulk soil deliveries.
Wet clay soils are much heavier (1.6+), while compost-rich mixes drop to 0.8–1.0 kg/L. Roof-garden designs use saturated weights.
Type the volume in litres. The calculator is preset to Garden Topsoil at 1.2 kg/L.
Flip to kilograms → litres to find how much space a given weight of garden topsoil takes up.
See kilograms, pounds, millilitres and gallons. Each litre adds 1.2 kg.
Moist garden topsoil is about 1.2 kg/L. It is lighter than sand or clay because it contains organic matter and air spaces. To convert, multiply the volume in litres by 1.2. To go the other way, divide the weight in kilograms by 1.2.
kg = Litres × 1.2
L = kg ÷ 1.2
1 L → 1.2 kg
10 L → 12 kg
100 L → 120 kgConvert 5 litres of garden topsoil to kilograms: 5 × 1.2 = 6 kg, or 13.23 lb. Reversed: 6 kg ÷ 1.2 = 5 L.
| Scenario | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 L of garden topsoil | 1 × 1.2 kg/L | 1.2 kg |
| 5 L of garden topsoil | 5 × 1.2 kg/L | 6 kg |
| 20 L of garden topsoil | 20 × 1.2 kg/L | 24 kg |
| 100 L of garden topsoil | 100 × 1.2 kg/L | 120 kg |
| 10 kg of garden topsoil (reverse) | 10 ÷ 1.2 kg/L | 8.33 L |
| Litres | Kilograms | Pounds | US gallons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 L | 0.3 kg | 0.66 lb | 0.07 gal |
| 0.5 L | 0.6 kg | 1.32 lb | 0.13 gal |
| 1 L | 1.2 kg | 2.65 lb | 0.26 gal |
| 2 L | 2.4 kg | 5.29 lb | 0.53 gal |
| 5 L | 6 kg | 13.23 lb | 1.32 gal |
| 10 L | 12 kg | 26.46 lb | 2.64 gal |
| 20 L | 24 kg | 52.91 lb | 5.28 gal |
| 50 L | 60 kg | 132.28 lb | 13.21 gal |
| 100 L | 120 kg | 264.55 lb | 26.42 gal |

1 litre of garden topsoil weighs 1.2 kg (1200 grams, or 2.65 lb), using a density of 1.2 kg/L.
1 kg of garden topsoil is 0.833 litres. Divide the weight by the density: 1 ÷ 1.2 = 0.833.
Multiply the volume by 1.2. For example, 10 litres of garden topsoil is 12 kg and 50 litres is 60 kg.
