Read articleWood Mulch weighs 0.4 kg per litre. Convert litres to kilograms (and back) using its exact density.
1 liter of Wood Mulch weighs approximately 0.4 kilograms (or 400 grams) at standard room temperature. Because mass equals volume multiplied by density (\(m = V \times \rho\)), multiplying volume in liters by 0.4 gives the exact mass in kg.
Wood Mulch has a density of 0.4 kg/L, which makes it 60% lighter than water. Shredded bark mulch is very light, with a bulk density of just 0.4 kg/L — less than half the weight of water.
Garden beds, play-area surfacing, tree rings and bulk landscape supplies.
Fresh, wet mulch can be twice as heavy as dry, aged mulch. Chip size and wood species also matter.
Type the volume in litres. The calculator is preset to Wood Mulch at 0.4 kg/L.
Flip to kilograms → litres to find how much space a given weight of wood mulch takes up.
See kilograms, pounds, millilitres and gallons. Each litre adds 0.4 kg.
Shredded bark mulch is very light, with a bulk density of just 0.4 kg/L — less than half the weight of water. To convert, multiply the volume in litres by 0.4. To go the other way, divide the weight in kilograms by 0.4.
kg = Litres × 0.4
L = kg ÷ 0.4
1 L → 0.4 kg
10 L → 4 kg
100 L → 40 kgConvert 5 litres of wood mulch to kilograms: 5 × 0.4 = 2 kg, or 4.41 lb. Reversed: 2 kg ÷ 0.4 = 5 L.
| Scenario | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 L of wood mulch | 1 × 0.4 kg/L | 0.4 kg |
| 5 L of wood mulch | 5 × 0.4 kg/L | 2 kg |
| 20 L of wood mulch | 20 × 0.4 kg/L | 8 kg |
| 100 L of wood mulch | 100 × 0.4 kg/L | 40 kg |
| 10 kg of wood mulch (reverse) | 10 ÷ 0.4 kg/L | 25 L |
| Litres | Kilograms | Pounds | US gallons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 L | 0.1 kg | 0.22 lb | 0.07 gal |
| 0.5 L | 0.2 kg | 0.44 lb | 0.13 gal |
| 1 L | 0.4 kg | 0.88 lb | 0.26 gal |
| 2 L | 0.8 kg | 1.76 lb | 0.53 gal |
| 5 L | 2 kg | 4.41 lb | 1.32 gal |
| 10 L | 4 kg | 8.82 lb | 2.64 gal |
| 20 L | 8 kg | 17.64 lb | 5.28 gal |
| 50 L | 20 kg | 44.09 lb | 13.21 gal |
| 100 L | 40 kg | 88.18 lb | 26.42 gal |

1 litre of wood mulch weighs 0.4 kg (400 grams, or 0.88 lb), using a density of 0.4 kg/L.
1 kg of wood mulch is 2.5 litres. Divide the weight by the density: 1 ÷ 0.4 = 2.5.
Multiply the volume by 0.4. For example, 10 litres of wood mulch is 4 kg and 50 litres is 20 kg.
