Read articleEngine Oil (SAE 30) weighs 0.88 kg per litre. Convert litres to kilograms (and back) using its exact density.
1 liter of Engine Oil (SAE 30) weighs approximately 0.88 kilograms (or 880 grams) at standard room temperature. Because mass equals volume multiplied by density (\(m = V \times \rho\)), multiplying volume in liters by 0.88 gives the exact mass in kg.
Engine Oil (SAE 30) has a density of 0.88 kg/L, which makes it 12% lighter than water. A mineral SAE 30 engine oil is lighter than water at 0.88 kg/L. Synthetic oils run slightly lighter or heavier depending on the base stock and additive pack.
Oil changes in cars, trucks and generators, workshop drum purchasing, and waste-oil collection by weight.
Different viscosity grades vary by only a few percent: 5W-30 is near 0.85 kg/L and 15W-40 near 0.88. Oil is also less dense when hot.
Type the volume in litres. The calculator is preset to Engine Oil (SAE 30) at 0.88 kg/L.
Flip to kilograms → litres to find how much space a given weight of engine oil (sae 30) takes up.
See kilograms, pounds, millilitres and gallons. Each litre adds 0.88 kg.
A mineral SAE 30 engine oil is lighter than water at 0.88 kg/L. Synthetic oils run slightly lighter or heavier depending on the base stock and additive pack. To convert, multiply the volume in litres by 0.88. To go the other way, divide the weight in kilograms by 0.88.
kg = Litres × 0.88
L = kg ÷ 0.88
1 L → 0.88 kg
10 L → 8.8 kg
100 L → 88 kgConvert 5 litres of engine oil (sae 30) to kilograms: 5 × 0.88 = 4.4 kg, or 9.7 lb. Reversed: 4.4 kg ÷ 0.88 = 5 L.
| Scenario | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 L of engine oil (sae 30) | 1 × 0.88 kg/L | 0.88 kg |
| 5 L of engine oil (sae 30) | 5 × 0.88 kg/L | 4.4 kg |
| 20 L of engine oil (sae 30) | 20 × 0.88 kg/L | 17.6 kg |
| 100 L of engine oil (sae 30) | 100 × 0.88 kg/L | 88 kg |
| 10 kg of engine oil (sae 30) (reverse) | 10 ÷ 0.88 kg/L | 11.36 L |

208 L × 0.88 kg/L ≈ 183 kg.
1 litre of engine oil (sae 30) weighs 0.88 kg (880 grams, or 1.94 lb), using a density of 0.88 kg/L.
1 kg of engine oil (sae 30) is 1.136 litres. Divide the weight by the density: 1 ÷ 0.88 = 1.136.
Multiply the volume by 0.88. For example, 10 litres of engine oil (sae 30) is 8.8 kg and 50 litres is 44 kg.
